Sensys Gatso Installs Gantry-Mounted Automated Traffic Control (ATK) Safety Systems in Sweden
04-05-2026
Sensys Gatso Group, a global leader in traffic safety solutions and trusted innovation, announced the first installations of the company’s gantry mounted Automated Traffic Control (ATK) cameras on three high-traffic roads. The deployment is part of a broad agreement first announced in 2022 estimated to be worth up to SEK 850 million over a 12-year period.
The gantry mount will provide a much wider view of traffic than traditional road-side units.
In collaboration with the Swedish Transport Administration (Trafikverket), the cameras were installed on Route 27 in Kärda outside Värnamo, the Stallbacka Bridge in Trollhättan, and Route 21 at Vanneberga.
This first installation will be followed by others in the coming weeks. The aim is to reduce the average speeds on accident-prone roads, decreasing the number of crashes, fatalities, and serious injuries. Unlike traditional roadside cameras, these units are mounted on a gantry directly above the roadway, giving the system a broader view of multi-lane roads and tunnels. "By placing the camera on a gantry above the road, we can monitor more lanes simultaneously," says Erik Hemgren, Key Account Manager at Sensys Gatso Sweden.
In addition to the improved range, the new technology delivers sharper images, allowing police to identify other offenses, such as illegal use of mobile phones while driving. "We look forward to establishing a state-of-the-art traffic safety camera system together with the Swedish Transport Administration and we are very proud to contribute to Vision Zero,” said Jörgen Andersson, Managing Director of Sensys Gatso Sweden AB. “The Swedish ATK program saves as many as 20 lives per year, helping make Sweden's roads some of the safest in the world." The collaboration between Sensy Gatso and the Swedish Transport Administration dates to the early ‘90s.
The installations are part of the procurement award first announced on October 8, 2022, in which Sensys Gatso Sweden was selected by the Swedish Transport Administration to provide new traffic-safety cameras, including installation and maintenance for the nationwide Automated Traffic Control (ATK) program. The ATK system is managed jointly by the Swedish Transport Administration and the Swedish Police Authority.
As part of its commitment to trusted innovation, Sensys Gatso developed a specialized speed enforcement camera system housed in a custom mechanical enclosure designed to operate in confined spaces and demanding environments. Instead of expensive automated cleaning systems, the system features an innovative cone in front of the camera which creates an air pillar to help keep the lens clean. The cameras offer reliability and superior image resolution demonstrated through rigorous competitive assessments.
